Designing AI Products for Non-Technical Users

The best AI products don't shout "AI" on the screen. They quietly remove steps, reduce stress, and help people feel more confident in their work.

In many industrial and engineering environments, the people using your product are extremely skilled — but not in AI or software. They have safety checklists, project timelines, and complex multi-discipline coordination to manage. When we add AI into their tools, the goal is not to impress them with technology. The goal is to make their day measurably easier.

This sounds obvious, but it is consistently underestimated in product design. Teams get excited about capabilities — the model accuracy, the retrieval speed, the number of parameters — and lose sight of whether a field engineer in a remote facility can actually use the thing without stopping to think about how it works.

Here is what I have found actually matters.

  • *Reduce choices, not just steps**

The first instinct when adding AI is to offer more. More suggestions, more modes, more configuration. But non-technical users are already making hundreds of decisions every day. What they need from a tool is fewer decisions, not more options dressed up as intelligence.

When I design AI-assisted workflows, I try to remove the choice entirely wherever possible. If the system is confident, it should act. If it is less confident, it should surface one clear suggestion — not five alternatives ranked by probability. The user should only need to decide when a decision genuinely requires their judgment.

  • *Explain what the system is doing, in their language**

Trust is the real product. If users do not understand what changed, why it changed, or what the system used to reach a conclusion, they will not trust the output — even if it is correct. And once trust is lost, they will work around the feature entirely.

This means showing the source. If an AI field was auto-populated from a datasheet, show which document. If a validation check flagged a conflict, show which two values are in conflict and why they cannot coexist. If a suggestion is based on historical project data, say so plainly.

I have seen products where this simple context layer — "This was filled from Document X, revision 3" — increased adoption by more than any UX redesign. People need to be able to check the AI's work, not just accept it.

  • *Design the error state first**

Most AI product design focuses on the happy path — the moment when everything works and the suggestion is correct. But the cases that define whether users trust a product are the edge cases and the failures.

When an AI feature gets something wrong, what happens? Does the interface make it easy to correct? Is the error surfaced with enough context to understand what went wrong? Can the user report it or override it cleanly, without losing their other work?

I always design the error and override experience before the success experience. If those flows are clunky or confusing, no amount of accuracy in the model will save the product.

  • *Keep the AI in the background**

The best AI features are the ones users do not consciously notice. They are just doing their job, and things happen to be a little faster, a little more accurate, with fewer dead ends. The value is real, but it is invisible.

This is different from designing AI as a feature to be demonstrated. When AI is the centre of the UI — the big button, the prominent badge, the constant animation — it creates pressure on the user to engage with the technology rather than their task. That pressure is the opposite of what we want.

The goal is not to make engineers think about AI. It is to make their engineering work better, and let them forget that anything has changed.

  • *What this means in practice**

When I work on AI features for engineering or operational workflows, I apply a few consistent tests. Can a new user complete the core task without ever seeing or thinking about the AI? Does the output include enough traceability that a user can verify it independently? Is the override or correction path as smooth as the primary path? Would the feature feel useful even if the AI was wrong half the time — because the interaction design is that good?

If the answers are yes, the feature is likely to stick. If not, it will become an ignored checkbox on the feature list — present in the product, absent from actual use.

Good AI products do not replace human judgment in high-stakes environments. They support it, quietly, in the background — reducing cognitive load, catching things that are easy to miss, and giving engineers the confidence to move faster without losing control.
